Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 2026
This privacy policy applies to the Guru Android application (“the App”) published by Ashwin Kumar (“we”, “us”, “our”).
What data we collect
We do not collect, transmit, or store any personal information.
The App does not:
- Ask you to create an account or sign in
- Collect your name, email address, or any other identifying information
- Track your location
- Access your contacts, camera, or microphone
- Display advertising
- Use analytics, tracking, cookies, or crash reporting
- Share your personal data with any third party
What stays on your device
The App stores the following data locally on your device only:
- Learning preferences — your chosen script (Devanagari or transliteration), repetition count, pause length, and Guru volume. Stored in Android shared preferences, never transmitted.
- Learning progress — which verses you have completed and your current position in each scripture. Stored in Android shared preferences, never transmitted.
- Installed scripture content — audio and text files downloaded from Firebase Storage and saved to your device’s application support directory. Content is cached on-device and is not re-downloaded unless you update or reinstall.
Internet access
The App requests the INTERNET permission for one reason: fetching scripture
content. When you open the library or install a scripture, the App contacts Google Firebase
to discover which scriptures are available and whether a newer version exists (a public index
served by Firestore), and then downloads the corresponding text and audio files from Firebase
Storage (guru-cdbc5.firebasestorage.app). These are requests for static, public
content that is the same for every user. No account, personal information, or usage data is
sent with these requests.
Firebase (Firestore and Firebase Storage) is operated by Google. Their privacy practices are described at firebase.google.com/support/privacy.
Third party services
The App uses Google Firebase Firestore and Firebase Storage to provide scripture content. These services may process technical information associated with network requests as part of operating their services. The App does not send your name, email address, account information, learning progress, or other personal information to Firebase.
Data retention and deletion
The App does not retain personal information on our servers. Learning preferences and learning progress remain on your device until you reset them, clear the App’s data, or uninstall the App. Downloaded scripture content remains on your device until it is removed by the App, you clear the App’s data, or you uninstall the App.
Permissions
| Permission | Why it’s used |
|---|---|
INTERNET | Discover and download scripture content from Google Firebase (Firestore index and Storage) |
FOREGROUND_SERVICE | Keep audio playback running when the screen is locked |
FOREGROUND_SERVICE_MEDIA_PLAYBACK | Required by Android 14+ for media foreground services |
WAKE_LOCK | Prevent the device from sleeping mid-session |
Children’s privacy
The App does not collect any information from anyone, including children under 13. It contains no advertising, no account creation, and no user-generated content.
Changes to this policy
We will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page if we make any material changes. We do not anticipate changes to the types of information described in this policy unless the App’s functionality changes.
